Professor Emeritus Hiroaki Kimura Awarded Honorary Doctorate from the University of Glasgow

KIT Professor Emeritus, Dr. Hiroaki Kimura, was recently awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Letters by the University of Glasgow, through the Glasgow School of Art.(Note:)

Dr. Kimura pursued his studies at the Mackintosh School of Architecture of the Glasgow School of Art, under the registration of the University of Glasgow, where he earned his doctoral degree in 1982 for his research on Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Over the past four decades, he has played a pivotal role in bringing Mackintosh’s work to Japan and the world at large, through his influential publications. One of his most significant contributions has been his comprehensive documentation of the transitions of the Glasgow School of Art building, originally designed by Mackintosh. It was this remarkable achievement that earned him the prestigious honorary doctorate. Notably, this recognition follows an honorary doctorate Dr. Kimura was awarded by Chiang Mai University (Thailand) in 2020.

The ceremony took place on July 11, 2025, at the University of Glasgow’s Bute Hall, as part of the Glasgow School of Art’s graduation ceremony. Following a summary of Professor Kimura’s achievements by Professor Sally Stewart, Head of the Mackintosh School of Architecture, Professor Graham D. Caie, Dean of Faculties of the University of Glasgow, conferred the honorary doctorate upon him. In his acceptance speech, Dr. Kimura reflected on his formative years as a student in Glasgow and shared words of encouragement and inspiration with the new graduates—artists, designers, and architects— about to embark on their professional journeys.

Note: The Glasgow School of Art is an accredited institution, validated by the University of Glasgow which serves as the conferring body for degrees awarded to graduates of the Glasgow School of Art. The final authority on the conferral of degrees rests with the University of Glasgow’s Senate.
